GitHub overhauls Copilot system with GPT-4 and voice support

GitHub, a Microsoft-owned software development platform, has announced the inclusion of OpenAI’s GPT-4 model in its AI pair programmer system, Copilot.

The “Copilot X” update will add chat and voice support to the coding tool, providing a new ChatGPT-like experience within code editors. This feature enables the chatbot to recognize and explain code, recommend changes, and fix bugs, transforming it into a coding assistant.

The Copilot chat has now entered technical preview, allowing users to analyze code for security flaws and contribute to the addition of helpful comments to code blocks. Copilot X is part of GitHub’s larger vision of AI being present at all stages of the developer lifecycle. Thomas Dohmke, GitHub’s CEO, explained that the tool would “fundamentally influence the developer experience.”

It will provide developers with a better interaction system. With the command “Hey, GitHub!” users can now integrate voice support and interact with the tool using their voice. In addition, the update will include an AI-generated answer for code documentation, such as React, Azure Docs, and MDN. Developers can get up-to-date answers through Copilot’s chat interface by scanning these open-source repositories.

GitHub Copilot will be integrated into pull requests to assist developers in creating AI-generated descriptions, with tags completed automatically by the tool based on what has changed in the code. The system will also use the command-line interface (CLI) to assist users in writing and running commands.

Copilot X will initially be available only in Microsoft’s Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code apps during the technical preview, with plans to expand it to other IDEs in the future.
