Meta reveals plans for text-based social network

Meta, is reportedly developing a new text-based social network codenamed P92, and could be called Threads to compete with Twitter.

Users will be able to follow accounts they already follow on Instagram and potentially import followers from decentralized platforms like Mastodon. The app’s interface, which resembles Twitter, has been leaked in screenshots that have been verified by insiders. It includes blue verification ticks, profile pictures, and engagement buttons.

Meta’s chief product officer, Chris Cox, described Threads as a separate space for creators and public figures to share timely updates about their interests. The platform is currently being coded and is expected to launch soon, possibly by the end of June. It will be built on the foundation of Instagram, allowing users to sign in with their existing credentials and carry over their followers, bios, and verification.

The new text-based network app could become a rival to Twitter and surpass alternatives like BlueSky and Mastodon. With Meta’s large user base of approximately two billion on Instagram, P92 has the potential to exceed Twitter’s 300 million users.

Meta is also said to be in talks with influential figures such as Oprah Winfrey and the Dalai Lama to join the platform. Safety, ease of use, and reliability are emphasized by Meta, providing creators with a stable environment to grow their audiences.
