IBM Cloud for Education abandoned after two years

IBM has deprecated its Cloud for Education service, which was launched just two years ago. The service offered a handful of research-centric VM types pre-configured with apps like IBM’s SPSS statistical software.

IBM launched the service in April 2021, when it stated that it was essential to make computing lab resources accessible off-campus as educational institutions transitioned to remote learning due to the pandemic.

However, with educational institutions now operating from their physical campuses, IBM has decided to deprecate the service. In a FAQ, IBM stated that it continues to evaluate its service offerings and that new catalog services such as VPC, Code Engine, and third-party services from Dizzion and Citrix can now provide the capabilities required by the academic community.

The service will continue to operate as usual until November 30, 2023. Users have been urged to have a chat with IBM about what they do next, and IBM has promised to be in touch to help with data and workload migration.

The deprecation of IBM Cloud for Education comes a week after Red Hat announced a deal with communications giant Nokia to take over its cloud business.
