ChatGPT saw its website traffic decline for the first time in June.
Analytics firm Similarweb reported a decline of 9.7% in worldwide desktop and mobile traffic to the ChatGPT website compared to May, with a corresponding drop of 5.7% in unique visitors. Additionally, the data revealed an 8.5% decrease in the average time spent by visitors on the website.
Experts suggest that this decline in traffic indicates a waning interest in the chatbot, as its novelty factor diminishes. David Carr, Senior Insights Manager at Similarweb, believes that the growing demand for generative AI with real-time information is a possible explanation for this shift. Rishi Jaluria, an analyst from RBC Capital Markets, supports this notion, highlighting the rising interest in alternatives to ChatGPT.
Another possibility is that users are switching to other chatbots, such as Google’s Bard. It is also possible that the decline in traffic is due to the summer break, as fewer students are using ChatGPT for homework help.
OpenAI has not commented on the decline in traffic. However, the company has said that it is working on a number of improvements to the chatbot, including making it detailed and efficient.
