Orbital Materials aims to revolutionize clean energy materials

Orbital Materials is planning to utilize artificial intelligence (AI) to uncover ideal formulations for sustainable jet fuel and rare-earth mineral-free batteries.

Jonathan Godwin, co-founder of Orbital Materials, spent three years at DeepMind exploring advanced material discovery, where he watched the landmark release of AlphaFold, an AI model that speeds the hunt for novel pharmaceuticals and vaccines. Godwin believes that artificial intelligence will revolutionize the material world sooner than expected.

Orbital Materials intends to train AI models on chemical structures in order to develop recommended formulae based on desired material qualities. This method blends creative ability with practical utility. While Orbital Materials first focuses on carbon capture, the company plans to expand into sectors such as fuel and batteries. Following in the footsteps of synthetic biology and drug development businesses, the ultimate objective is to license out their AI software and innovative materials.

Greener material manufacturing represents a huge business potential, especially in Europe, where authorities are tightening carbon emission laws. Renewable energy, transportation, and agriculture are projected to see significant development in advanced materials sectors.
