Barts Health NHS Trust hit by ransomware attack

Barts Health NHS Trust, the largest NHS trust in the United Kingdom, has confirmed that it is investigating a ransomware incident.

The trust, which manages five hospitals in London and serves over 2.5 million patients, was recently listed on the dark web leak site operated by the ALPHV ransomware gang, also known as BlackCat. The group claims to have stolen 70 terabytes of sensitive data, making it the largest healthcare data breach in the UK.

ALPHV has since given Barts Health three days to contact them, or they would publish the data, which includes confidential documents related to citizens, employee identification documents and internal emails marked “confidential.”

A Barts Health spokesperson did not deny that a security breach had occurred, nor did they refute the authenticity of the stolen data samples. The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) also confirmed it is investigating the attack.
