Apple pulls the plug on autonomous electric vehicle

Apple has decided to cancel its electric car project, a venture it had been exploring for over a decade with significant financial investment.

The decision, surprising to the project’s team of around 2,000 employees, comes after a shift in focus and multiple leadership changes. The project’s cancellation redirects employees primarily to Apple’s AI division, but with some of the employees specializing in automotive development, there will be some facing layoffs.

Apple had tried to scale back its plans for an autonomous vehicle to create an electric car with a number of advanced options, but in the end the company has instead decided to abandon the project entirely.
