Ukraine Deploys Clearview AI’s Facial Recognition

Share post:

Ukraine has started using Clearview AI’s facial recognition technology according to the company’s CEO.

With access to more than 2 billion images from the Russian social media service VKontakte, Clearview’s database offers a lot.

This includes better identification of the dead, reuniting refugees separated from their families, identifying Russian operatives, and helping the government debunk fake social media posts related to war.

The technology is now available to Ukraine’s defense ministry. However, other parts of Ukraine’s government will deploy the technology in the coming days.

Clearview Chief Executive Hoan Ton-That noted that the technology should not be used as the only source of identification.

Ton-That also stated that he disapproves of the technology being used to violate the Geneva Conventions. The Geneva Conventions create legal standards for humanitarian treatment during the war.

Users in Ukraine are currently undergoing training on how to use the technology.
