Apple invests millions in generative AI

Apple is investing millions of dollars a day in generative AI, according to a report by The Information. It sees generative AI as an area of growth and an opportunity to compete with major companies like Amazon, Google, and Meta, which have foundational models.

Apple has several teams working on different AI models, including an image generation model, a multimodal model to handle both text and visual data, and a conversational AI unit. The company’s largest foundational model, ‘Ajax GPT’, is reportedly more powerful than OpenAI’s GPT 3.5.

According to sources familiar with the team, the developments come four years after Apple’s director of AI, John Giannandrea, authorized the establishment of a team to build conversational AI, also known as large-language models, before the technology became a focus of the software industry.
