British software company alleges trademark infringement by Meta

A British software company, Threads Software Limited, is alleging trademark infringement by Meta. The company claims that Meta copied its name and brand when it launched its own social media app, Threads, in July 2023. Threads Software Limited says it had declined four offers from Meta to purchase its domain name, “threads.app.”

After Meta launched Threads, Threads Software Limited was removed from Facebook. The company’s managing director, John Yardley, said that the business “faces a serious threat from one of the largest technology companies in the world.”

Meta’s Threads app was designed to compete with Elon Musk’s X app. It was released shortly after Musk introduced a temporary limit on how many tweets a user could view. Threads quickly became popular, reaching 100 million users in five days. However, Zuckerberg said that more than half of Threads users had stopped using the platform by the end of July. The app has since introduced new features and has so far had 120 million active users this month.

Threads Software Limited is giving Meta 30 days to cease using the Threads name. If Meta does not comply, the company says it will seek an injunction from the UK courts.
