48 countries say no to ransomware payments

A coalition of 48 countries, led by the United States, is set to solidify their commitment this week to not pay ransomware hackers in the face of cyberattacks.

Anne Neuberger, the Deputy National Security Adviser for Cyber and Emerging Technology, announced that this commitment will be a key focus during the annual gathering of the Counter Ransomware Initiative (CRI).

The European Union and Interpol will also endorse this joint policy statement against yielding to ransom demands. The CRI’s member nations are embarking on an initiative that includes the application of artificial intelligence to analyze blockchain transactions for uncovering illicit funds associated with ransomware groups. They will also introduce an information-sharing program among members and pledge support to any member nation facing a ransomware incident.

The CRI, established in 2021, has consistently strived to set norms for combatting and defending against ransomware.
