COVID-19 changed a lot of things around the world. One of such things includes a massive increase in the number of remote jobs. Working remotely also added reliance on platforms like Facebook for most if not all interactions. This in turn forced the Facebook internal hacking team to adjust as the nature of different threats began to change.

Facebook red team manager, Nat Hirsch, and colleague Vlad Ionescu took this as an opportunity to evolve and expand their mission. This then led to the creation of a new red team named Red Team X. The new team focused on evaluating hardware and software that Facebook relies on but doesn’t develop itself.

Founded in the spring of 2020 and headed by Ionescu, Red Team X represents a sort of hybrid approach working independently of Facebook’s original red team prod third party products whose weaknesses would impact the social giant’s security. With Red Team X, Facebook has put dedicated resources toward running down these inquiries.

According to Ionescu, “COVID for us was really an opportunity to take a step back and evaluate how we’re all working, how things are going, and what might be next for the red team”
