Apple Denies Market Power Allegations, Says iOS Has Alternative App Distribution

The app store practices of Apple are currently under the radar of the Australian consumer watchdog’s probe. The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) no doubt seems concerned about the amount of market power wielded by Apple and Google in the app marketplace space. In a bid to clear the air on the issue, Apple rejected the characterization that the Apple Store is the most dominant app marketplace. The tech giant further stated that there are other options for iOS users which include going to a website.

According to Apple, there is a healthy competitive market. The tech giant further revealed that it doesn’t consider having a substantial degree of power in any market relevant to the issues that are the subject of the ACCC’s current inquiry neither does it agree that there is a market failure that requires regulatory intervention or legal action to address. In the statement released, the tech company stated, “Apple does not believe that, properly examined, that assumption is correct in the wider online context in which the app marketplace operates and is concerned that such an assumption means that the Commission’s analysis may not be examining whether that assumption is well founded as a starting point,”
