Apple No Longer Defaults to a Female Voice in iOS

Share post:

Apple recently added two new voices to Siri’s English offering, eliminating the default selection of female voices in the latest beta version of IOS. Anyone who sets up Siri will now have to choose one voice.

The beta version, which recently went online, removes the distortions in the speech interfaces and gives users who now have the power to select a voice that speaks to them a variety of speech and sound patterns.

The two new voices use source-talent recordings made using Apple’s neural text-to-speech engine, making the voices flow more organically through phrases that are now available to English-speaking users around the world, and Siri users can select a personal language preference in 16 languages.

These two new voices are just the first extension of Siri’s language selection to add more diversity in voice, sound and regional dialect to make smart devices more inclusive.

Siri currently handles 25 billion requests a month on more than 500 million devices and supports 21 languages in 36 countries.
