Apple Blamed For Storing Chinese Customers’ Data

Tech giant Apple is facing widespread criticism after it confirmed storing Chinese customer’s data inside data centers based in China.

While Apple has revealed that it was complying with Chinese laws on the storage of its citizen’s data, many have resisted the decision, as China has been accused in the past of using technology to persecute its citizens and carry out mass surveillance.

An expert in an interview with the BBC said that Apple was effectively “handing over keys” to the Chinese government on the subject of data storage.

Prof Michael Posner, a former Obama administration official, and director of the Center for Business and Human Rights at New York University said Apple has been “playing by Chinese rules” by storing the encrypted data in the country.

He said, “I would have been uncomfortable a long time ago [using Apple products] if I were critical of the Chinese government. I would have no confidence that there is any privacy in anything that I’m putting up on the cloud using an Apple product.”
