Apple’s Passkeys Could Eliminate The Use Of Passwords

Apple is gearing up for a password-free future with a new iCloud keychain called “passkey,” which was unveiled at WWDC 2021.

The company teased a new feature called “passkeys in iCloud keychain.”

This is provided for testing in iOS 15 and macOS Monterey

This new technology will allow a user’s iPhone, iPad or Mac to have passkeys.

These passkeys will be synced across devices, which means that they can be recovered even if a user loses all their devices.

Compared to conventional passkeys, these passkeys have a number of security advantages. They cannot be guessed and cannot be used for all services. They are also not vulnerable to phishing or data breaches.

Once implemented, a user only needs to authenticate with Face ID to log in. Passkeys in iCloud Keychain can be used anywhere that supports WebAuthn, which currently includes browsers and apps on Apple’s platforms.

Although users will not be able to use passkeys immediately, Apple offers a number of other security and privacy features in iOS 15 and macOS Monterey.

These include a new built-in authenticator for two-factor logins, a private relay feature that encrypts web traffic and hides a user’s IP address, and a feature that allows users to create proxy email addresses.
