Swedish Supermarkets Closed Due To U.S. Ransomware Attack

About 500 of the 800 Coop supermarkets in Sweden were forced to close after the ongoing ransomware attack, which affected about 200 businesses in the United States.

While the supermarket was not targeted by the hackers, one of their software vendors uses Kesaya, a Florida-based software vendor that the hackers used as a channel to spread the ransomware through cloud service providers.

The supermarket said it had to shut more than half of its stores on Friday after cash registers and self-service checkouts stopped working.

A spokeswoman for Coop Sweden said of the incident: “We first noticed problems in a small number of stores on Friday evening around 6:30 pm so we closed those stores early. Then overnight we realized it was much bigger and we took the decision not to open most of our stores this morning so that our teams could work out how to fix it. The whole paying system at our tills and our self-service checkouts stopped working so we need time to reboot the system.”
