Facebook whistleblower sets up NGO to tackle social media harms

Frances Haugen, a former product manager and Facebook whistleblower is launching a nonprofit organization called Beyond the Screen to develop answers to the dangers posed by social media.

Haugen circulated internal Facebook documents last year detailing the social media company’s failings to protect teenage girls on Instagram and crack down on vaccine misinformation,

Beyond the Screen will create an open database to document how big tech companies are failing to meet their ethical obligations to society and outline potential solutions. It will also collaborate with Project Liberty, which is developing a new operating protocol for social networks, and Common Sense Media, which is committed to safe media content for children.

According to Haugen’s previous information leak, the company preferred revenue to security, but her NGO will focus on concrete strategies to help users regain control of their experiences on social networks.
