Amazon announces increase in hourly wages

Amazon has confirmed an increase in hourly wages for workers in the United States, claiming that the average entry-level wage for most frontline logistics and transportation workers will be more than $19 an hour.

The company’s minimum wage of $15 an hour for all hourly workers in the United States will remain unchanged, and the starting salary for jobs in Amazon’s customer fulfillment and transportation groups will rise to $16 an hour, according to an email from a spokesperson.

According to Amazon, the raise represents nearly $1 billion in additional spending over the next year. Amazon is the second largest private employer in the United States, behind Walmart Inc. At the end of 2021, Amazon employed more than 1.1 million people in the United States. As of June 30, the company employed more than 1.5 million people, the majority of whom are hourly workers who package and ship items or work in retail stores such as the Whole Foods Market and Amazon Fresh.

According to a statement, the company is also expanding access to a program that allows employees to be paid more often than once or twice a month.
