Google introduces PaLM API and Makersuite prototyping tool

Google Cloud has announced that its artificial intelligence (AI)-powered applications, such as the Pathways Language Model (PaLM) API for language models and the Makersuite prototyping tool, are now available to developers.

Google Workspace’s new AI productivity tools are currently being tested. Developers can use the PaLM API to build on top of the large language model, which can respond to natural-sounding prompts and return sensible prose.

Models optimized for multiturn use cases such as content generation and chat are available in the PaLM API, as are more general-purpose models for summarization, classification, and other tasks. The API currently has an efficient model, which is only available to a limited number of developers in the Private Preview, with a waitlist for other interested parties expected to open soon.

Makersuite is a low-code API tool that assists developers in prototyping ideas. Google intends to add prompt engineering, synthetic data generation, and custom-model tuning features in the future. The tool enables business owners to experiment with different use cases and tailor the API to their specific requirements. Developers can export their prompt in popular programming languages and frameworks such as Python and Node.js.

The API and tool were designed in accordance with Google’s AI safety standards, with training data collected from non-Google developers’ use of the API kept private to the company that uses it.

Google announced several new AI features for enterprise cloud customers in addition to the PaLM API and Makersuite. This includes access to foundation models on the Vertex AI platform, which allows enterprises to build and deploy machine learning models and AI applications at scale, as well as the Generative AI App Builder, a tool designed to create apps that use conversational AI.
