Samsung Trying To Make Foldable Phones Mainstream

Share post:

At Samsung’s Unpacked event in August, the Korean tech giant is expected to heavily promote foldable phones, which the company will focus on in the coming years.

Samsung will have to deliver a refined foldable design, better camera specifications, 5G and affordable prices that are inexpensive compared to other brands of mobile phones.

In Samsung’s most recent second-quarter earnings conference call, executives stressed the importance of foldables to the company and the need to heavily promote them to boost sales.

Research firm Strategy Analytics has forecast that sales of foldable smartphones will rise from less than 1 million units in 2019 to 100 million in 2025.

For Samsung’s foldable devices to be commercially successful, either the Galaxy Z Flip 3 or the Galaxy Z Fold 3 or both must be offered at a price of $1,000. At that price, foldable devices will be commercially viable.

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 may be in the price list, but it’s unlikely that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 can get there because the Galaxy Z Flip 3 is actually two phones with a hinge. Samsung’s Galaxy Fold 2 is now selling for $1,800, down from $2,000 when it first came out.

Ultimately, Galaxy Z Fold needs to be reduced in price to about $1,400 in order for it to sell significant quantities.
