Instagram For Kids Put On Hiatus Following Backlash

Facebook announced it will be pausing the Instagram for Kids project amid pressure and leaked internal research by the Wall Street Journal revealing that Instagram was toxic to teenage girls.

The new development, as detailed by Instagram head Adam Mosseri, revealed that Facebook would use the time during the break to listen to “parents, experts, policymakers and regulators.”

While the project is currently on hiatus, Instagram will for the time being work on extending its project to new opt-in tools for parental supervision to make Instagram more suitable for 13- to 19-year-olds through the app.

Mosseri further revealed that he believed it would be better to have a version of Instagram for 10-12 year olds, rather than “relying on an app’s ability to verify the age of kids who are too young to has an ID. The reality is that kids are already online.” Mosseri assured everyone that more announcements regarding the project will be made in the coming months.
