EU Lawmakers Vote To Better Curtail Tech Giants

Share post:

EU lawmakers are demanding additional provisions to curtail the power of U.S. technology giants.

Some of these additional provisions include extending the scope of the draft rule to include the tech companies retailing activities and their business users outside Europe, extending the rule to other platforms and to the travel websites booking.com, Alibaba and Zalando.

Other demands include the call to ensure that web browsers, virtual assistants and connected televisions are included in Margrethe Vestager’s list of online intermediation services.

The legislator’s proposal from the lawmakers will make it easier for consumers to set default settings for their services while switching to products owned by rivals.

The lawmakers urged the commission to produce an annual report on gatekeepers while creating space for investigations into new services and new products. Vestager herself commended the lawmakers for their action.

“It sends a clear message that in our EU democracy it is not for BigTech to set the rules of the game, it is for legislators.”
