Vietnamese AI expert faces ejection from U.S. over Meta lay off

Huy Tu, an AI expert from Vietnam, has 90 days to find work or leave the United States after being laid off by Meta.

Tu is in the United States on a work visa, which, like most work visas, is tied to Tu’s job. Tu had 90 days after losing his job to find a new one or face deportation.

Tu was one of those affected by the massive layoffs that shook Meta, and he is currently at a crossroads. Tu is concerned that 90 days will not be enough time to find something new.

Tu has applied for over a hundred jobs. Adding that it feels risky to take a break from the computer for even a few minutes because they need an offer by February 6. That is when the 90-day period expires.

“I believe stability is a myth,” Tu says. “Even if I get a job, I doubt I’ll be able to sleep properly for at least a year. I’m afraid it’ll just vanish.”

Tu added that they miss their work at Instagram, as well as their coworkers and the office. They haven’t returned since being laid off via email in November. Instead, Instagram stated that it would pack Tu’s desk and mail their personal belongings to them as soon as possible.
