Microsoft has announced the release of a new AI-powered Bing feature that allows users to generate high-resolution images using Bing Chat.

The Bing Image Creator feature is powered by OpenAI’s DALL-E generative image generator. While the company did not specify which version of DALL-E it is using, it did state that it is one of the most recent models.

The Bing Image Creator will be available exclusively through Bing’s Creative Mode at first, gradually rolling out to Bing Preview users. The feature will be available in the Edge sidebar as well. When the user types in a prompt, the new image generator is activated, resulting in four high-resolution DALL-E images with a small Bing logo in the bottom-left corner.

Microsoft has put safeguards in place to limit the generation of harmful or unsafe images in an effort to prevent such occurrences. Image Creator now incorporates OpenAI’s safeguards as well as additional safeguards.

When the system detects a potentially harmful image, the prompt is blocked and the user is warned. Microsoft has reiterated its commitment to thoroughly testing this new image generator in the open in order to receive feedback.

Visual Stories and Knowledge Cards 2.0, two new search features from Bing, will also be introduced. The previous version of Bing’s Knowledge Cards was similar to Google’s knowledge panels, but they now include AI-generated infographics and more interactive elements such as charts, graphs, and timelines. Meanwhile, Visual Stories, which are similar to AI-generated Instagram stories, may appear as top search results or in Knowledge Cards.
