PC Shipments Increase By 10% Due To Chromebook Demand

PC sales worldwide reached a record 121.7 million units in the second quarter of 2021, a 10% increase over the second quarter of 2020 according to a report by market research firm Canalys.

Those shipments included laptops, desktops, Chromebooks, and tablets, but Chromebooks recorded the highest amount of sales with 11.9 million units of shipments in the second quarter, which is a 75% increase over 2020 Q2.

Chromebooks are a big part of the education sector and are often offered at school and used by students. According to Canalys research analyst Brian Lynch, Google is trying to expand its reach. The company is considering targeting small businesses with individual subscriptions to Google Workspace and special promotions on CloudReady licenses to reuse old PCs alongside existing Chromebook fleets.

Giving his take on the development, Lynch explained during a press release, “The success of Chromebooks is proving to be remarkably resilient. Their growth streak has extended well beyond the height of the pandemic as they have cemented a healthy position across all end-user segments in the industry. Even as key markets like North America and Western Europe have seen schools begin to open up, shipments remain elevated as governments and education ecosystems plan for long-term integration of Chromebooks within digital learning processes.”
