Mercedes-Benz partners Google to bring Supercomputers to its cars

Mercedes-Benz has announced a software partnership with Google in order to provide “supercomputer-like” navigation and other services in all of its vehicles. It includes an operating system called MB.OS, which will run on its own supercomputer brain designed specifically for its vehicles. Advanced features will include over-the-air updates, natural language voice commands, and improved navigation.

This means that once “Level 3” autonomous driving is available, drivers will be able to watch YouTube videos while driving. Furthermore, Mercedes-Benz and its vehicles will soon provide “supercomputer-like performance” in every vehicle, as well as a comprehensive suite of sensors. The move will aid the German company’s push toward self-driving vehicle mobility.

When the car is parked or in Level 3 autonomous driving mode, the system will provide Google traffic information and automatic rerouting, and drivers will be able to watch YouTube on the car’s entertainment system.

The new system, which will replace the current Mercedes-Benz infotainment system, will include Google Maps, Google Assistant, and the Google Play Store, among other features. The collaboration aims to provide Mercedes-Benz customers with a more seamless and connected driving experience.

“Every single Mercedes from that point forward will have a supercomputer in it,” Chief Executive Ola Kaellenius said at an event in Sunnyvale, California, referring to the mid-decade launch of its new operating system MB.OS. “We take a prudent approach because no-one knows how big that potential pot of gold is at this stage.”

The new system, which will replace the current Mercedes-Benz infotainment system, will include, among other things, Google Maps, Google Assistant, and the Google Play Store. Mercedes-Benz customers will benefit from a more seamless and connected driving experience as a result of the collaboration.
