Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google and Alphabet, voiced worry about the influence of artificial intelligence (AI) on society during an interview on CBS’s “60 Minutes.”
Pichai warned that the rapid growth of artificial intelligence will damage “every product of every company” and replace employment employed by “knowledge workers,” such as authors, accountants, architects, and software engineers.
Scott Pelley, the interviewer for “60 Minutes,” checked out many of Google’s AI initiatives during the interview and voiced concern about the advanced capabilities of products like Bard. Pelley was particularly taken with a narrative written by Bard from a six-word prompt, remarking that “the humanity at superhuman speed was a shock.” Pichai said that society must prepare for AI, which will eventually be pervasive, even aiding radiologists in prioritizing urgent situations.
Pichai also warned that AI will magnify the problem of disinformation and fake news, and he believes the consequences will be much bigger, even causing harm.
Google has launched a document outlining “recommendations for regulating AI,” but Pichai said that society needs to quickly adapt with regulation, laws to punish abuse, and treaties among nations to make AI safe for the world. He stressed the importance of involving social scientists, ethicists, and philosophers in the development of AI to align with human values, including morality.
Pichai was questioned if society is prepared for AI technology such as Bard. “On the one hand, I feel no,” he said, “because there appears to be a mismatch between the pace at which we can think and adapt as societal institutions and the pace at which technology is evolving.”
Despite this, Pichai voiced confidence, stating that more people are concerned about the ramifications of AI than previous advancements. He noticed that the worry is occurring sooner, which he interprets as a good indication.
