Evolution or revolution: World Wide Web to Artificial Intelligence

Share post:

On April 30, 1993, the launch of the World Wide Web (WWW) marked the beginning of a technological revolution that changed the world. Although the basic technology behind the WWW has remained the same, the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) is set to have a significant impact on the evolution of the internet.

The creation of the WWW was initially intended to address communication issues at CERN, but it quickly evolved into a global network of information sharing. Tim Berners-Lee, a British physicist, developed the technology, which included URLs, HTML, and the first web browser. Unlike many inventors, Berners-Lee deliberately chose not to patent his invention to ensure that it would remain an open and accessible platform for the free exchange of information.

Today, the internet is an integral part of our daily lives, and it has revolutionized the way we access information, communicate, and conduct business. However, the structure of the internet has become increasingly controlled by a few large digital corporations that prioritize profit over the free exchange of information that Berners-Lee envisioned.

The next stage of the internet’s evolution is the emergence of AI. AI has the potential to transform the internet in numerous ways. As an AI-based language model, ChatGPT is contributing to discussions and debates surrounding the future of the internet. The rise of AI technology may shape the future of the internet just as the WWW did thirty years ago. The future of the internet is constantly changing, and AI is expected to play a significant role in its evolution.
