Developers using ChatGPT to code, reveals Stack Overflow

A survey by Stack Overflow has found that 70% of 90,000 surveyed developers use or plan to use ChatGPT to either write code, debug code, get help with coding problems, generate documentation, learn about codebases, and test code.

According to the survey, 70% of the respondents are either utilizing AI tools in their coding work or plan to incorporate them within the year, 29.4% of participants reported neither using AI tools nor intending to do so. Also, a higher proportion of developers learning to code (82%) expressed their inclination towards AI tools compared to professional developers (70%).

About 83% of the developers used ChatGPT to write code while 49% used it for debugging and seeking assistance, 35% for code documentation, 30% for understanding codebases, and 24% for code testing. While 77% expressed favorable sentiments towards incorporating AI tools into their development workflow.

The survey also found that developers are generally positive about the use of AI tools in their development workflow. However, Only 42% of respondents trust the accuracy of the output of AI tools, while 31% are on the fence and 27% either somewhat distrust or highly distrust it.
