Biden’s meeting with AI firms displeases ethics experts

Share post:

Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Anthropic recently met with President Biden to address the need of assuring the safety of AI technology before its adoption. The President underlined the importance of care and ethical issues, but numerous AI ethics specialists were not impressed.

According to these experts, the conference omitted those who have warned about the potential dangers of AI and others who have been warning about its dangers for years. They also critiqued the lack of presence from groups that have actively addressed ethical problems and worries about AI.

Critics have voiced concerns about the selection process, pointing out that several of the invited corporations had a poor ethical track record. They argued that because these businesses are partially responsible for the AI difficulties that the White House seeks to tackle, their participation may be detrimental to the conference’s ultimate purpose.

Despite these critiques, the White House proposed a $140 million National Science Foundation investment to build seven AI research facilities. In addition, six AI companies have agreed to engage in public assessments of their AI systems at DEF CON 31, including Anthropic, Google, Hugging Face, Nvidia, OpenAI, and Stability AI.
