During the I/O developer conference, Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google, revealed the release of PaLM 2 – an advanced iteration of the tech giant’s large language model. With over 25 AI-driven products set to incorporate the upgraded model, Google aims to demonstrate its commitment to keeping pace with competitors such as Microsoft and OpenAI while prioritizing AI safety.

PaLM 2 is a multi-purpose AI model that is currently available for preview, and it offers various versions, including a compact option designed for mobile devices. Google plans to roll out the new model across its search engine, Google Cloud services, and its chatbot, Bard. PaLM 2’s capabilities extend beyond these products, as it can power chatbots in the style of ChatGPT, perform language translation, write code, and even analyze and respond to images.

In addition to announcing PaLM 2, Google also unveiled a lineup of new Pixel devices during the conference. These devices included an updated entry-level phone, the Pixel Fold – Google’s first foldable smartphone, and a highly anticipated Pixel Tablet. The most apparent way for users to engage with PaLM 2 will be through Google’s own chatbot, Bard, which is now open to the public globally for the first time.

Moreover, Google emphasized the enhancements made to its Bard chatbot. The upgraded version of Bard will now possess improved mathematical and reasoning capabilities, and in the next few weeks, it will integrate images and videos into its responses. Additionally, users will soon be able to include images in their prompts, providing a more immersive and interactive experience with the chatbot.
