A new survey of AI experts conducted by Axios, Generation Lab, and Syracuse University found that a majority support the creation of a federal “Department of AI” to regulate the emerging technology.

The survey found that 37% of respondents favored a federal agency to regulate AI, compared to 22% who favored a global organization or treaty, 16% who favored Congress, 4% who favored the White House, and 3% who favored the private sector.

The survey also found that experts are split on the likelihood of AI escaping human control. About 1 in 5 experts (20%) said AI will “definitely” stay in human control, while the rest were split between those saying AI will “probably” or “definitely” get out of human control (38%) and those saying “probably not” (32%).

The survey’s findings come ahead of a series of AI forums on Capitol Hill, beginning September 13 and hosted by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. The forums will feature top U.S. tech CEOs and AI specialists.

Furthermore, the survey delves into the experts’ perspectives on AI’s control, with varying opinions on whether AI will escape human control. 62% of respondents predict that AI will exacerbate racial, gender, and economic disparities, while 77% see AI affecting job roles in customer service, and a substantial portion expect job losses in art, design, content creation, and administrative sectors due to AI.

The survey’s authors said the findings suggest that AI experts are “united in a view that the emerging technologies must be regulated.”
