IBM CEO Krishna backtracks on AI job loss comments

IBM CEO Arvind Krishna has appeared to backtrack on recent controversial comments about AI-related job losses.

In an interview with CNBC in August, Krishna suggested that generative AI tools could lead to job losses, particularly in back-office and white-collar roles. However, in a speech this week, Krishna said that IBM has no intention of laying off tech staff, such as developers or programmers, and instead plans to ramp up hiring for roles in these areas.

Krishna’s latest comments come amid growing concerns about the impact of AI on the workforce. A recent study from McKinsey found that certain administrative roles, such as customer service, office support, and HR, will likely decline due to automation. However, the study also found that jobs that require creativity, social intelligence, and problem-solving skills are less likely to be automated.

Krishna’s comments suggest that IBM is taking a more nuanced approach to AI and automation than some other companies. The company is recognizing that AI can be used to improve productivity and augment workers’ skills, rather than simply replacing them.
