Former Google Al Researcher Joins Apple’s Team

Former Google Al Researcher, Samy Bengio joins Apple as the tech giant tries to boost the growing role of machine learning in Apple’s software and services.

Bengio, who was part of a cadre of AI experts who left Google in protest at the dismissal of their Al ethics researchers, Margaret Mitchell and Timnit Gebru will now lead “a new Al research unit” while working directly under Apple’s senior vice president of machine learning and AI strategy, John Giannandrea.

Giannandrea himself ran Google, where he worked for eight years before joining Apple in 2018.

Bengio showed his support for Google’s two AI ethics researchers and left his job voluntarily after the employees were fired for raising ethical concerns about new applications of AI and machine learning.

During his 14 years at Google, Bengio worked on applications such as voice and image analysis.
